Incoterms 2000: ICC Official Rules for the Interpretation of Trade Terms
Published in Paperback by ICC Publishing, Inc. (January, 2000)
Authors: International Chamber of Commerce, International Chamber of Commerce, and ICC Publishing
Average review score:

Pretty good summary for a book written by a committee.
The subject of Incoterms is almost arcane in American jargon. The previous version was less readable even though the format was similar. I suggest that everyone trash their 1990 version and take advantage of the changes in format so that you can explain the meaning and impact of the Incoterms 2000 to your organization.

A Must ...
This book is a must for every sales, logitics and shipping managers who intend to work seriouly on a worldwide basis. Incoterms are the keys of international commerce and must be understood by all parties involved.

The Official Guide
This book may not be the most enjoyable you've ever read, but it is the offical guide put out by the ICC. It is broken down by Incoterm and into each category of obligation by the seller and buyer. This is the book that will be translated into multiple languages for everyone in the world to read. You really can't ask for more. However, if you are new to Incoterms, don't expect to understand it after going through it only once. It's still not an easy subject to grasp for new exporters/importers.

For American exporters/importers I would definately recommend reading a supplementary book put out specifically for Americans. Incoterms are partially written with European countries in mind, so there are important considerations for countries with borders and exports laws similar to the USA. The best supplimentary book I've seen so far is "Incoterms for Americans" by Frank Reynolds, the USA representative to the Incoterms 2000 revision meeting. The 2000 version may not be officially out yet. I got it at a seminar.

Jazz Styles: History & Analysis
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (December, 1987)
Author: Mark C. Gridley
Average review score:

Outstanding
This book is very informative and can be easily related to those w/ no jazz training! Billy Barnard was also an excelent teacher... along with his help on this book!

Everything You Wanted to Know About Jazz
This is the most accurate, user-friendly intro to jazz. It focuses on the music, not the personal lives of the musicians. It explains, patiently and systematically, in luminously clear prose, what jazz is and how to get the most out of listening to it. It details the origins of jazz as well as the distinguishing characteristics of all the major styles: Dixieland, Swing, Bebop, Cool, Hard Bop, "Free Jazz" and Avant-Garde of the 60s and 70s, and Jazz-Rock Fusion. It profiles 144 musicians' contributions (their sources, their styles, and lists of the others they influenced) and provides classification of more than 1000 other musicians, in easy-to-understand categories. Strategies for locating the best albums for all the top musicians. Optional CD of historic recordings is available. Optional CD of narrated demonstrations of the jazz instruments, song forms and methods that jazz musicians use to make their music is also available. Loaded with instrument sketches and photos of key musicians in action, this is America's most widely-used intro to jazz and has been translated into 5 foreign languages. Its author is an award-winning researcher and jazz musician who has travelled to South America, The Caribbean and Africa, as well as all the jazz centers of America. His work is so down-to-earth and practical that it has been adopted for use in jazz appreciation and jazz history courses at more than 500 high schools and colleges.

Gridley Swings -- and hits The Groove On this One!
This is my first in depth study on Jazz in America. My first musical interests as a teenager were jazz, classical, and Bob Dylan. I began listening to Miles Davis, Al Hirt, Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane in the early sixties. They were followed by Bob Dylan, and, in 1967, my last year in the Army, Bay Area bands. An avid tape collector, I got reintroduced to jazz in the last few years as I have returned to those roots and sought some information about the origins of jazz, as well as the key players in the United States. Gridley's book was found at a used book store, alas, without the cassettes. I have longed for the cassettes, so that I could hear the music he references in his text. This IS a text book. I found it challenging, not having any musical knowledge. I still am in over my head on the musical descriptions, but the chapters are logically broken down into the origins of jazz in New Orleans, early jazz, bop, hard bop, Chicago style jazz, west coast jazz, etc. Gridley clearly knows his players. He shows the progressions of players and followers and has special designations for some of the more modern jazz players in my time frame -- Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Charlie Parkery, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, etc. And he also references some of the newer men or groups on the jazz scene, including Sun Ra, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra. I saw the latter play in the late sixties. Gridley's description, for instance, of Mahavishnu's kinetic energy of those years is apt. I personally left that show wired to the max, convinced I could never endure anything like that again. I am sure that this book is associated with college level music courses that are meant for musically inclined students who want to go deeper into the genre. And this book, in my opinion, is so well written, with such a deep glossary, such vivid musical descriptions of the various sounds produced by different musicians and groups, that I am convinced it would be a maximum value for such a student. I will most likely shell out the full price so that I can grab the cassettes. I believe that this book, coupled with the cassettes, will allow me to go much deeper into my own personal revival of American Jazz. I would STRONGLY recommend this book for novices and college level students who are interested in jazz at a more professional level. Organizationally, the book is right on. Plenty of charts that describe the various "roots" of American jazz as they coalesced in New Orleans. And Gridley makes a point that sounds valid in saying that not all those various "roots" were African-American. I am grateful I found this gem in the half-priced book store and will surely purchase the original in the near future. I think you will like this one if you are approaching jazz at both an afficionado and technical level. Good reading!

Johannes Brahms: Complete Symphonies in Full Score (Vienna Gesellschaft Der Musikfreunde Edition)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (August, 1975)
Authors: Johannes Brahms and Hans Gal
Average review score:

Excellent way to study the classics.
Buying the full score of these wonderful symphonies allows you to dig deeper into such wonderful works. I strongly recomend you buy this full score.

Great Reproduction of a Classic Scores
This edition is (inexpensive), detailed, and easy to read. I use these scores for study and rehearsal and I highly reccommend it. Detailed corrections (as well as explanations) from earlier editions were done by Hans Gal.

It is a large score (9 3/8 x 12 1/4 inches)and the is very durable. The pages are thick and the binding allows for the score to lie flat for easy use.

Very good
This edition of the Brahms symphonies is relativley cheap for the wealth of material it presents. The music is very easy to follow and is a must for the Brahms fan and serious student or layperson.

Symphonies Numbers 8 and 9 (New World in Full Score)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (November, 1984)
Author: Antonin Dvorak
Average review score:

Dvorak's Greatest Symphonies
Everyone goes on and on about the 9th. Yes, it's a great symphony, but a bit overplayed. The 8th, on the other hand, is a fantastic work which still sounds fresh to the listener 100 years after it was written.

If you're interested in learning about the 8th symphony, seeing the scoring of that famous Largo in the 9th, or simply are curious about the way Dvorak scored for the orchestra, this edition of these two symphonies needs to be in your library. Conductors know that Dover editions are wonderful inexpensive alternatives to "Urtext" editions, and are ideal for initial study, building a library, and even use as a conducting score in many cases. They're great volumes, they're published well, they look and feel great.

These two symphonies should be represented in any classical music lover's recording collection, and the scores make excellent listening companions. If you can read the music, and especially if you might ever have to conduct these works, this edition is a must-buy.

Dvorak's AMAZING New World Symphony
I played a shortened version of this piece with my high school Jr Band. Then, we played it in Sr band, and finally got to see it performed by the Clevland Symphony Orchestra. Wow. I wouldn't think a piece of classical music, normally considered snooze material, would have such an impact. We were inspired and awed. We felt the music, especially since we've played it. The speed, agility and variring nature of the piece brings you up in the 1st section... slows you down in the second with beauteous harmony... brings the pace back up in the third for the final heart-wrenching finish. Buy this piece!!! You'll be happy you did!!!

Symphony No. 7 in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1992)
Author: Gustav Mahler
Average review score:

Not Quite Authoritive
While this is a very fine and inexpensive edition of Mahler's 7th Symphony it is not quite authoritive. The original 1909 edition (of which this is ) was riddled with errors that Mahler corrected in his own score. There were so many corrections to be made that when the International Mahler Society of Vienna began to issue definative editions of the scores they started with the one most needing it, the 7th. That was issued in 1959 and is the version that has been used in all recordings and performances since then. So while this Dover edition reproduces the 1st edition it is an edition riddled with errors and no longer used.

Symphony No. 7
I think this Symphony is Mahler's 3rd Best Symphony he ever did. This edition of the work, has everything that is played. I am a young to be conductor, and I analyized it already. I totally disagree with the viewer that says that this edition isnt the best. Well, it is the best.

Mahlers finest musical hallucination
A reprint of the original Austrian score at a fraction of the price. This least-known of Mahler's works may indeed be his best. A most unorthodox use of symphonic form takes the listener from dark to light, from terror to joy; this work spans all the emotions. Unusual instrumentation, like the tenor horn, mandolin, and guitar add to the bizzare but delightful concoction. It's a tie with Sym. # 4 for my Mahler favorite.

Amistad Rising: A Story of Freedom
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt Children's Books (01 March, 1998)
Authors: Veronica Chambers and Paul Lee
Average review score:

Decent Introduction.
Until 1997 and the release of Spielberg's grand film, AMISTAD, I had never heard of the Amistad uprising. That movie, through a mix of fact and fiction, piqued my interest and I began reading and researching all I could about the Amistad. That search led to me learning a great deal more about African-American History than I had ever learned before. In the way the movie piqued my interest, AMISTAD RISING will pique younger student's interest in not only the Amistad, but a host of other subjects as well. The book itself is fairly short and contains some very powerful illustrations. The text skimps on the facts of the Amistad and relies a great deal upon the author's imagination to tell the story of Cinque. Nevertheless, there is enough factual information that children can learn something without becoming bored with the specifics of historical data. This is a wonderful book and children are fascinated by the pictures. Great reading for African-American History Month.

Amistad Rising
It was in 1839 and slavery was still prominent and legal. Many slave owners had become very rich from selling human beings and wanted to continue this way of life. Amistad Rising is written and published in a way that allows readers to visualize and imagine what life would be like for and African-American during the time of slavery. The reader is also allowed to identify with the main character Joseph Clinque and witness the events that occurred in his life. The reader is also made aware of how he was able to empower himself to settle the conflicts in his life. I believe this book would definitely appeal to students in grades six and up. Not only are they provided with the history of Amistad, but they are invited to relate to it's main character. It is important for students to read books that have a historical background about mistreatments of others and how conflicts can be resolved without violent measures. This book would be a great tie-in for a unit on slavery. When reading about slavery in history texts, it is sometimes hard for students to visualize the events being discussed or attach a human emotion to the event. I believe the illustrations in this book provide that for the students.

How to Build a Small Two Manual Chamber Pipe Organ
Published in Paperback by Organ Literature Foundation (June, 1975)
Author: H.F. Milne
Average review score:

Very nice overall. Very to the point if dated.
Contains very good information on how to build a chamber pipe organ with tracker action. There are 10 foldout 18 x 20 drawings that come with the book that detail everything from pipe types, manuals, casework, windchests etc.. It's very tough to describe how to build wood pipes and the drawings don't give enough info for this purpose. Even his other descriptions are hard to grasp without firsthand knowledge or good photos. Overall great book for anyone considering a project like this.

Great book for someone wanting to build a tracker organ
I purchased and read this book back in the late 1970's while in high school. I have since then anticipated building a pipe organ. This book gives detailed and practical advice on all aspects of building a small tracker action pipe organ. The materials and some of the terms are quite dated. I do not think the section on the building of pipes would be practical to most hobbyists, but the information on the building of the chests, framework, tracker action, and cabinet is fantastic. Another interesting similar book is "Organbuilding for Amateurs" by Mark Wicks in which the author describes a method of making pipes out of paper.

Excellent, if you can get through the 'ancient' language
Detailed enough to build an organ; especially everything but the pipes. These can be purchased new or used if one gets them on the same wind pressure. The the furnature maker, its a worthy challenge [for someone who has only the pipes and cares not a little about the rest]. A real companion to Mark Wicks excellent book all for the same reasons.

A Night on Bald Mountain: Fantasy for Orchestra in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 1999)
Authors: Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov and Modest Petrovich Moussorgsky
Average review score:

Facts About This Score
To correct the previous reviwer's comment about this work being "just the way Mussorgsky wrote it", this reviwer would like to point out that the Dover score is a reprint of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's arrangement and orchestration. While a brilliant and deservedly popular work in its own right, Rimsky's arrangement was prepared about 5 years after the composer's death and bears only the most superficial resemblance to Mussorgsky's 1867 score (full title: St. John's Night on the Bare Mountain). The Dover reprint is very clean with a sturdy binding at a very reasonable price - certainly worth the 4 stars from this reviewer.

Full Score for Mussorgski's A Night on Bald Mountain
No arrangements, no alterations, no changes whatsoever to this beautiful work. It is left exactly as Mussorgski wrote it. For the musician who wants inspiration or anyone who loves beautiful music.

Great score!
I had a presentation to do for my Music History class. In college everything needs to be exceptional. I looked at many scores and found this one. It is beautifully writen. Deffinately a must have, for Music teachers, and Mussorgsky lovers alike.

Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 2, and 3 in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (July, 1990)
Authors: Serge Rachmaninoff and Sergey Rachmaninoff
Average review score:

Not for the Pianist
This edition has the full orchestra music as well as the piano music. But, all staffs are so tiny that you really can't do that much with it.

Amazing!
The Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos are among the hardest ever written. This book does a good job of showing the composer's intentions. Its inclusion of the ossia version as well as the simplified version of the solo part helps the reader to compare the two. Also, the orchestra parts are easily read and well spaced. There is never too much or too little on one page. It is a great book for conductors, pianists, or anyone else who loves the Rach concerti. This is a must have for any serious piano concerto fan!

The most beautiful and dificult piano concertos
The beauty of the second concerto and the strength and skill level of the third concerto is very difficult, it's impressive that Rachmaninoff compose this beautiful concertos after his psicological problem. Sergei Rachmaninoff one of the most important pianist in the world begin your musical development when he was a young, and create a dificult and magician world of all the piano lovers. I'm a music student. I'd like to be a conductor and this edition provide me of the magic of the three first piano concertos of Rachmaninoff. The first time I open the book a greatest world of sound came to me. It's a very good choice if you are a student of conducting or you are a music lover. It's Amazing!!!
